The human desire to be liked is hardwired into our DNA. It’s a vestige of the caveman days when human beings faced constant life-threatening peril at the hands of numerous predators.

Because our human brains have been hardwired, through evolution, to seek safety in numbers, we have a built-in desire to be accepted by others. This desire to fit in often leads us to do things just for the sake of fitting in. Peer pressure is a common manifestation of this. We act and think like those within our social networks.

This human trait is known as Group Think.

While Group Think served an important purpose – keeping early humans alive, it is in modern times a character flaw because, Group Think causes you to be closed-minded.

And this is a problem, when it comes to pursuing success/wealth.

According to my Rich Habits Study, being closed-minded was a common Poor Habit among the poor in my Rich Habits Study. Conversely, having an open mind was one of the common Rich Habits among the self-made millionaires in my study.

Why is that?

Having an open mind allows you to learn and grow into the person you need to be in order to succeed in life.

If you’re poor and want to be rich, you must change. That change happens when you grow into the person you need to be in order to succeed in life. And this growth is only possible by exposing yourself to new and novel ideas, which can only happen if you have an open mind.

Since most millionaires are self-made, Group Think is a Poor Habit they’ve learned to break or avoid. It simply interferes with your ability to learn and grow.

Self-made millionaires make a daily habit of swimming upstream. They break free from the Group Think that holds most back in life. They challenge Group-Thinkers and, as a result, are often subjected to intense criticism when they do not conform.

Don’t unknowingly become a victim of Group Think. When you think like the group, your success depends on the success of that group. And your level of success will only be as great as the level of success of the other members within your group.

Instead, do what self-made millionaires do – blaze your own path in life and keep an open mind in everything you do.

That’s the only way to transform yourself into the person you need to be in order for success to visit you.
