AdventHealth Research Institute released a Study in early 2026 focused on “brain age”. In the 2026 Study, researchers used MRI-based imaging to determine if a lifestyle shift, such as aerobic exercise, could influence “brain youth” over a 12 month period.

During that 12 month period 130 healthy adults between the ages of 26 – 58 were either randomly assigned an aerobic exercise program or assigned no aerobic exercise (control group). Those assigned aerobic exercise engaged in two 60-minute session of aerobic exercise a week and also instructed to aerobically exercise the rest of the seek to reach 150 minutes for the week. This Study was conducted over a 12 month period.

The non-exercise control groups brain age increased .35 years over that 12 month period. Their brains aged about 4 months.

Interestingly, the aerobic exercise group’s collective brain age reversed by about 6 months – their brains got 6 months younger over the 12 month period.

The bottom line? 150 minutes a week of aerobic exercise not only slows brain aging, it reverses it.
