The difference between a Boss and a Leader is as wide as the Grand Canyon. They are not even remotely similar.

A Boss is a Dictator. They demand and dictate what they want you to do, while providing very little follow up or feedback. A Boss seeks as little contact with their subordinates as possible. The Boss’s main priority is that an employee do their job competently. If an employee struggles, a Boss will reprimand their subordinates, in the hope they will improve their performance. If the subordinate does not improve, a Boss will seek a replacement who can get the job done to their satisfaction, while leaving the Boss alone as much as possible.

A Leader, however, seeks to teach, mentor and motivate.

Leaders see every employee as a mentee. They are uber-focused on teaching subordinates proven processes, habits and best practices in order to get the most out of their subordinates. Because of this, a Leader will invest their time in mentoring each of their subordinates to do what they need to do, until they are able to do it expertly.

Leaders also have a vision that they share with every employee. Leaders believe that the path to realizing that vision depends on how well the Leader teaches, mentors and motivates their employees.

A Leader takes personal responsibility for every subordinate who struggles on the job and will invest more time in teaching, training and providing valuable feedback to their subordinates.

When subordinates show improvement, a Leader will be ripe with praise and encouragement.

Leaders pride themselves on forging a team of employees who, in response to a Leader’s investment in teaching and training their subordinates, perform their jobs at the highest possible levels, which helps the company they lead prosper.
