Curiosity isn’t just a trait—it’s a superpower that fuels wealth and success. My Rich Habits research, studying 233 self-made millionaires and 128 individuals struggling financially, reveals that curiosity is a defining habit of the top 1%. This relentless drive to learn, explore, and grow sets the wealthy apart, transforming their lives and bank accounts. Let’s dive into why curiosity is a cornerstone of success and how you can harness it.
In my study, 94% of self-made millionaires reported reading for self-improvement at least 30 minutes daily, compared to just 2% of the poor. This isn’t casual reading—it’s a deliberate pursuit of knowledge, driven by curiosity. Millionaires devour books, articles, and industry reports to stay ahead. For example, a 2018 CNBC article on my research noted that millionaires like Warren Buffett spend hours daily reading to expand their understanding of markets and trends. Curiosity pushes them to ask, “What don’t I know?” and seek answers relentlessly.
Curiosity also drives innovation. My research found that 76% of millionaires pursued novel ideas or ventures, compared to only 9% of the poor. This habit of exploring uncharted territory leads to breakthroughs. A 2019 Business Insider piece highlighted how millionaires embrace “calculated risks” born from curiosity, testing new strategies or business models. Think of Elon Musk, whose curiosity about space travel birthed SpaceX. By asking “Why not?” instead of accepting the status quo, the wealthy create opportunities others miss.
Another key finding: 88% of millionaires actively sought feedback to improve, versus 5% of the poor. Curiosity fuels this openness to critique, as millionaires ask, “How can I do better?” A 2020 SUCCESS Magazine article on my work emphasized that this habit helps the wealthy refine their skills and businesses. They don’t shy away from tough questions; they lean into them, using feedback as a roadmap for growth.
Curiosity also builds networks. My study showed 68% of millionaires networked five hours or more monthly, compared to 11% of the poor. They’re curious about others’ expertise, forging relationships that open doors. A 2017 CNN article on Rich Habits noted that millionaires attend conferences and engage mentors to learn from those who’ve succeeded. This habit turns connections into knowledge and opportunities.
To cultivate curiosity, start small. Dedicate 30 minutes daily to reading about your industry or a new skill. Ask questions like, “What’s the next trend?” or “How can I improve?” Seek mentors or peers who challenge your thinking. Experiment with one new idea monthly, whether it’s a side hustle or a process tweak. Track your progress to stay disciplined.
The top 1% don’t stumble into wealth—they chase it through curiosity. As my Rich Habits: The Daily Routines of Millionaires to Create Wealth (2025 Expanded Edition) shows, this habit drives learning, innovation, and connections. Embrace curiosity, and you’ll unlock a path to success that’s anything but ordinary.
