The most successful self-made millionaires, the literal cream of the crop, refuse to follow the main path to building wealth. They understand that the main path is very crowded, very competitive and only delivers mediocre wealth.
These unique self-made millionaires explore other paths of wealth creation. I like to refer to these paths as rabbit holes.
A rabbit hole is something new and interesting, of which you do not know a great deal.
A good example of this is Elon Musk and Space X.
When Musk decided he wanted to build rockets to get to Mars, he formed Space X and invested nearly $40 million into Space X. Musk knew very little about rockets when he first went down this rabbit hole.
Nonetheless, he took a courageous leap down into that rabbit hole and today is among the foremost experts in rocket science, which has helped transform him into one of the wealthiest individuals on the planet.
A common downside of exploring rabbit holes, as a path to building wealth, is that these rabbit holes are lonely, dark, and riddled with adversity and obstacles. In the beginning, you are very much on your own as you learn what you didn’t know.
But at the end of every successful person’s rabbit hole story, particularly the self-made Dreamer-Entrepreneurs, is a pile of failed experiments that help transform you from a novice into an expert – these failures force you to grow in order to learn what works and what doesn’t work.
And that School of Hard Knocks learning sticks to the brain like scar tissue.
As one self-made billionaire once said, “I didn’t find the treasure. I dug 10,000 holes until the treasure found me.”
So here’s my question to you – What rabbit hole are you refusing to explore because of the fear that it might not work? Or, because of the fear that it might make you look weird? Or, because of the fear that people might laugh at you?
After you finish this article, I want you to open your calendar and block 60 minutes tomorrow labeled “Rabbit Hole #1.” Pick some rabbit hole you’ve been too afraid to venture down into. Then, for 60 minutes, leap into that rabbit hole.
The ideal, perfect life you want won’t be found on the main road. The main road is too crowded.
It’s waiting for you at the bottom of a rabbit hole.
Tomorrow morning, leap into that rabbit hole. Take a chance on yourself. You will never regret it.
